Shepherds at the grange,
Where the Babe was born,
Sang with many a change,
Christmas carols until morn.

The illustration

Hans Multscher, 1400-1467, worked as a painter, sculptor and engraver in the city of Ulm in the south German state of Baden-Württemberg. His Wurzach Altarpiece is one of the most important 15th-century German paintings. The original winged altar, which must have been on a grand scale, has been lost without trace; not even its location is known. But after it was dismantled, eleven panels found their way into the art collection of the Count of Waldburg Zeil in Schloss Wurzach, about half way between Ulm and Lake Constance. The panels can now be seen at the Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museen, Berlin.
